Majora’s Mask

Nintendo recently announced the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D for the 3DS. I am sure the announcement overjoyed many fans. Players have been asking for a re-release of the game for years. The news only serves to remind me of my dislike of the Legend of Zelda series as a whole.

I do not have fond nostalgia for the original game in the series. I played it when I was younger, but it never grabbed me. I never thought it was good, and I had no desire to wander around the world exploring. I felt the same about the sequel.

Not all my time with games in the Legend of Zelda series has been negative though. I loved A Link to the Past. It stands out as one of my favorite games on the Super Nintendo. I also enjoyed Link’s Awakening on the Gameboy. Something about both games hooked me in a way that the NES ones did not.

Then came the N64 era of releases and the Ocarina of Time. Again, I was not impressed with the game. They may have added a 3D environment to the game and the ability to ride a horse, but the dungeons, weapons, puzzles and bosses all felt like more of the same. The final boss battle especially felt like a copy of the SNES classic to me. I did not even bother to try Majora’s Mask when released next.

My time with the series has been minimal since then. I played the Gamecube and Wii versions of the game, but not enough for a lasting impression. Maybe the fact that it did not impress me enough to keep playing is as much of a review of those games as I need. I picked up a couple of the handheld games but never finished them. I am so jaded by the series that I have yet to pick up A Link Between Worlds, a game crafted after my favorite in the series.

I know my opinion of the Legend of Zelda is at odds with a lot of gamers. At times, it makes me feel like I have not given the games a fair chance. But with so many great games released over the years, I do not know why I should waste my time with something that does not connect with me. For those that it does, that is awesome. I might cringe when I hear people place certain titles in the series as best game contenders, but it does me no harm that other people can find enjoyment where I do not. Congratulations to all those waiting on the Majora’s Mask remake. I know you will get your money’s worth. Meanwhile, I will be checking something else out instead.
